Members of the Cedar Rapids Police Department answered questions on the introduction of red light cameras into the city during a live chat today.
The first red light camera went up at Second Avenue and Tenth Street on Feb. 13. Police have been mailing out warnings to violators but the grace period ends March 14.
The cameras will ultimately be monitoring moving violations at eight locations throughout the city. Their purpose is to catch violations and curb the amount of accidents at historically troublesome intersections.
Replay the live chat below. Cedar Rapids police officials have agreed to participate in another live chat on the subject in the next few weeks.
A red light camera was recently installed on First Avenue East facing northbound traffic at the intersection with 10th Street SE. Photographed Friday, Jan. 5, 2010. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
