Youssef Hmimssa, a Moroccan national, was arrested Sept. 28, 2001, in Cedar Rapids in the federal government's investigation of an international terrorism conspiracy related to 9/11.
Hmimssa was extradited to Michigan, where he served as the government's star witness in a 2003 terrorism trial in Detroit. A jury convicted two men on terrorism charges, but all charges were later dropped when it was revealed prosecutors withheld evidence from the defendants.
U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen, who presided over the terror trial, described Hmimssa as “a pathological liar.” Hmimssa did serve federal sentences for credit card and document fraud and then was deported in 2007.
