Adams MultiMedia, the parent company of The Gazette, announced today that Richard Green, a longtime media executive and editor, will be regional president and publisher of The Cedar Rapids Gazette and 11 other community newspaper titles in Iowa.
Green, who has been in the media industry since age 15, has led newsrooms and media organizations in five states. From 2011-2015, he was editor/VP-News and then president and publisher of the Des Moines Register.
As editor of The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, his newsroom won a 2020 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news related to the controversial pardons and commutations made by Kentucky’s outgoing governor. That staff also was a two-category Pulitzer finalist the next year for its coverage of the tragic death of Breonna Taylor, who was killed by Louisville police.
Green has also served as president and publisher of Enquirer Media in Cincinnati and supervised several other smaller newsrooms across Ohio. He comes to Adams from Lexington, Kentucky, where he was executive editor of The Herald-Leader and kentucky.com, a McClatchy property, until late 2025.
“I’m incredibly honored to lead such a treasured local news organization as The Gazette and the other community publications that form our Iowa Group,” Green said.
“I spent four years in Iowa a decade or so ago, and I know Cedar Rapids is a beautiful, dynamic community defined by a can-do spirit. I will be settling in the city and am eager to start new relationships here in Eastern Iowa and rekindle others across the state.”
Green started Monday, and he succeeds Kelly Homewood, who announced her retirement in January after a 26-year career with The Gazette.
“Rick Green has a tremendous track record in the media landscape and experience in the state of Iowa. We are pleased he has joined us to lead our Iowa operations,” said Mark Adams CEO of Adams MultiMedia.
Green said he is excited to work with The Gazette staff, including the 11 community titles.
“The one constant in our business for the past 20 years has been change and challenge,” he said. “I’m a firm believer that our role as journalists and marketing strategies is needed now more than ever before. There’s a wonderful team here, and I’m honored to work with each of them to fulfill our First Amendment responsibilities and to best serve our readers and advertisers, even as we protect taxpayers and our communities’ most vulnerable citizens.”
Adams Multi Media purchased The Gazette and 11 community titles in December 2025 from Folience, Inc. That transaction maintains independence and ownership by a family-held media company, a structure The Gazette has enjoyed through much of its 143-year history. Founded in 1883, The Gazette publishes a daily digital edition and three print editions weekly.
