President Barack Obama this week (Wed., Nov. 17, 2010) withdrew his nomination of Marsha Ternus to serve as a board member of the State Justice Institute. The Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice, recently removed by retention vote, was nominated by Obama in September.
The SJI is a non-profit corporation established by federal law “to award grants to improve the quality of justice in State courts, facilitate better coordination between State and Federal courts, and foster innovative, efficient solutions to common issues faced by all courts.”
The Des Moines Register in September noted that “[o]ne of the current [board] members is former [Iowa] Chief Justice Arthur McGiverin, who presided on the court from 1987 to 2000.”
