For the second time in four months, the jackpots in the Powerball and Mega Millions lottery games have topped the $300 million mark at the same time.
After no one won the Powerball jackpot Wednesday night, the game's big prize Saturday evening will be $384 million - or $250 million in a lump-sum payout.
The Mega Millions' jackpot for Friday evening's drawing will be an estimated $306 million - or $191 million as a lump-sum payout.
It's 'extremely unusual,” Iowa Lottery officials said, for both games to have big jackpots at the same time. The only other time that has happened was in August this year.
The Powerball jackpot was last won Oct. 25 with a ticket purchased in Louisiana.
The Mega Millions' jackpot was last won Oct. 13, when it was split between two tickets bought in Rhode Island and Michigan.
Both jackpots have been growing since then.
In Iowa, people can buy Mega Millions' tickets until 8:59 p.m. Friday and Powerball tickets until 8:59 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $2 each in both games.
So far this year, seven Powerball jackpots have been won, with six jackpot wins in Mega Millions.
The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million, and 1 in 302.5 million for Mega Millions.
