UPDATE: Tyler Deemer tried to elude authorities once more Friday, but failed this time.
Deemer, 23, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested around 12:35 between buildings near the Motel 6, 3325 Southgate Ct. SW. Police identified him as a suspect in a Marion robbery and believe he stole two vehicles. He escaped arrest at least twice earlier this week, prompting police to send his mug shot to media outlets.
More that 15 officers from various jurisdictions assisted with Deemer's apprehension Friday.
Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Joe Clark said undercover officers first spotted Deemer on foot in the area of the motel. When they approached him, Deemer ran toward Interstate 380, climbed over a chain-link fence and hid in some heavy brush.
Several police units were dispatched to the scene, and they set up a perimeter until a K-9 dog arrived.
“When the K-9 got close, he took off again,” Clark said.
Deemer ran west, but officers were waiting. One chasing him threatened to use a Taser, and Deemer was caught soon thereafter, a witness said.
“There will be additional charges, I'm sure,” Clark said.
No one was injured and the Taser was never deployed, police said. Deemer was taken to the Linn County Jail.
Clark said the Department of Corrections' High-Risk Unit assisted at the scene.
In addition to the most recent incidents, Deemer had previous arrest warrants in Lucas County for eluding and failing to appear in court on an operating while intoxicated charge. Another warrant was active in Lnn County for probation revocation.
“He's definitely drawn the attention of the police in the last few days,” Clark said. “Hopefully, with a little more investigation, we'll be able to clear up a few other incidents.”
