An Iowa City man is accused of striking and biting his girlfriend Monday, causing her to drop her 5-month-old baby, authorities said.
Iowa City police said they responded to the residence of Abdikadir Abdi, 23 of 2401 Highway 6 E No. 4012, when his girlfriend called 911 telling police he beat her.
Police say the victim told them Abdi had struck her in the right eye, causing the baby to fall from her arms onto the bed, and then to the floor. He also struck her stomach and hand, police said.
Police said the woman appeared to have swelling around her eye and was complaining of pain in her eye and stomach, but the baby was uninjured. The woman was transported by ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Abdi admitted he struck and bit her, police said, and also told them the baby fell to the floor during the incident. He is charged with domestic abuse assault without intent causing injury, and endangerment causing no injury.
He is being held at the Johnson County Jail on $7,500 cash bond.
