Police: Iowa City man threatened Iowa Public Defender's Office attorneys

An Iowa City man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening five attorneys at the Iowa Public Defender's Office by leaving voice mail messages like, “I'm going to take a lot more than just you out.”

Randy Alan Chipman, 46, nwas arrested this week on suspicion of first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor, after officers say he left threatening voice mail messages for five attorneys at the public defender's office on Saturday. The voice mail messages included, “I don't stop, I'm coming, don't you get it,” and “I'm only gonna do 10 years for what I'm going to do … you got a whole family out there,” according to a criminal complaint.

He also is accused of saying, “I got nothing more to lose,” and “It's Randy, you know who this is,” according to the complaint.

Police reported that the voice mail messages “alarmed all of the victims and other office staff,” prompting them to request protection orders. The public defender's office also has made arrangements to install a new security door as a result of the messages, according to the complaint.

According to state court records, Chipman has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for domestic abuse assault, intent to cause pain or injury and alcohol-related charges.

Chipman was being held at the Johnson County Jail on Thursday morning. His bond had not yet been set.
