Police: Iowa City man stole car to drive to Florida

IOWA CITY - A man is charged with second degree theft after stealing a car and attempting to drive to Florida.

Investigators say 32-year-old Navel Aguilar stole a car from the 900 block of North Dodge Street around 7:22 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle's owner saw Aguilar take the car and called 911, according to a criminal complaint from the Iowa City Police Department.

Officers pulled Aguilar over on Interstate 80 near West Branch, where he was taken into custody.

At the department, the complaint states he waived his Miranda rights and admitted to stealing the car to go home to Florida.

Second degree theft is a Class D felony in Iowa.

A judge set his bond at $100,000, cash only and he remained in the Johnson County Jail as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
