Using his wedding band, police were able to identify the man who died in a fiery semi-trailer truck accident on Interstate 380 last month.
Nusret Smajic, 31, of St. Louis, Mo., was the driver of the semi that crashed just south of the 5-in-1 bridge in Cedar Rapids on Aug. 24, police announced Wednesday. The semi hit the guard rail and caught fire around 1:25 a.m. that morning. The cab and appliances from the trailer fell off the elevated roadway to the ground below.
The charred remains of a male driver were found in the cab, making identification difficult, police said.
Smajic was driving the truck for Dino's Trucking, of St. Louis, Mo. Police interviewed company officials and had Smajic's wife identify his wedding band to confirm his identity.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said police have not determined what caused Smajic to lose control of his rig that rainy night.
