Police, firefighters, Four Oaks staff rescue boy

Police, firefighters, and Four Oaks staff prevented a 10-year-old boy from jumping off the roof of the agency's facility on Friday afternoon.

Staff at 5400 Kirkwood Blvd. SW called 911 a few minutes before 12:30 p.m. after the youth took off his clothes and got onto the roof of the two-story building, police Lt. Cory McGarvey said.

The boy threatened to jump off the roof, McGarvey said.

Officers were able to restrain the boy on the roof while firefighters were able to extend a ladder with rescue basket to remove him, said McGarvey, who was among the officers on the scene.

The boy suffered no serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, McGarvey said.  The juvenile will be charged with criminal mischief for intentionally damaging some heat venting pipes on the roof.

Four Oaks staff members Lynn Lafler, Jordan Dorrington, and Kyle Johnson "were the heroes this afternoon" for tackling the boy on the roof, preventing him from jumping or falling until police arrived, McGarvey said.

In addition to McGarvey, police officers are Kraig Kruger and Steve Yardley were on scene.  Fire Capts. Scott Bemer and Rick Halleran and firefighters Tom Clearman, Janeen Justice, Justin Jensen, Corey Archer, and Nathan Goodlove participated in the rescue.

Four Oaks operates a residential psychiatric program for youth.
