Police: Father used crowbar to assault son

CEDAR RAPIDS – Police said a Cedar Rapids man used a crowbar during a physical confrontation with his son Monday.
Shannon L. Coleman, 39, and his son, Zakkary L. Coleman, 2o, were both arrested after officers found them bloodied and bruised in the basement of their residence at 1048 G Ave. NW.
According to the police report, a verbal argument ensued between the two over money and because of the time Zakkary had returned home. Police responded around 5:30 a.m. Monday when a disturbance was reported.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Shannon Coleman assaulted his son with the crowbar, causing injuries to his head and torso. Zakkary Coleman was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center.
Shannon Coleman also needed treatment at St. Luke's Hospital after his son punched him, causing injuries to his head.
Both were arrested on suspicion of assault causing bodily injury with intent to cause serious injury. They were taken to the Linn County Jail, and were scheduled to make initial court appearances Tuesday.
Shannon Coleman has been convicted of domestic abuse assault eight times since 2000, according to online court records. He was scheduled to be sentenced on July 1 for one of the charges and a separate forgery charge.
Zakkary Coleman was convicted of domestic abuse assault three times in 2010.
