Police catch couple having sex in church parking lot

Police caught a couple having sex inside a car in a church parking lot in Cedar Rapids on Sunday.

An officer caught the man and woman having sexual intercourse around 1 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Calvin-Sinclair Presbyterian Church, 715 38th St. SE. A caller who reported the romp said the woman was “posing naked in the car” before the sex began, police said.

No charges were filed against the couple, and their names were not being released by police.

“Sometimes we do have people who, for lack of a better term, can't control themselves until they get to a private place,” said Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, a police spokeswoman.

Cedar Rapids police have received 78 calls about indecent exposure so far this year, including three this past weekend. Early Saturday morning, a man allegedly exposed himself to a dancer at the Lumberyard, 5910 Fourth St. SW, and was kicked out of the bar. The other report was of public urination in a parking lot off Glass Road NE.

But charges have been filed in less than 10 percent of those cases this year, police said. Hamblin said officers consider the location of the act and who might have seen it, among other factors.

“Part of it is the officer's discretion, just like if I stopped you (for speeding),” Hamblin said.
