Survey crews from the National Weather Service confirmed Sunday that a tornado struck the north side of Maquoketa on Saturday night. A second tornado also touched down near Goose Lake in Clinton County.
According to the report, the tornado that struck Maquoketa touched down at about 7:40 PM Saturday. The tornado was approximately 150 yards wide, and traveled 2.25 miles before dissipating. That tornado was rated an EF1 with winds of 105 miles per hour.
Areas around the Hillside and Timber City trailer home parks received extensive damage. Maquoketa's Cardinal Elementary School was also damaged in the tornado, an air conditioning unit damaged the schools roof and a sign in front of the building was destroyed.
One person was injured in that tornado.
A second tornado touched down around eight o'clock Saturday night just northeast of the Clinton County community of Goose Lake. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado was on the ground for a half-mile producing winds of 75 miles per hour. The 100-yard wide tornado was rated an EF0. No structures were damaged and no one was injured in the tornado.
