Peoples Church hosting Holocaust Remembrance Service
The Peoples Church, 600 Third Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids, will host a Holocaust Remembrance Service on Sunday, May 1, at 6 p.m., with a small reception to follow.
This year's speaker is Lena Gilbert, the daughter of Fred and Ann Gilbert, two survivors of Auchswitz. Following the war, Temple Judah sponsored Fred and Ann and brought them to Cedar Rapids, found them a home, jobs, and helped them start their lives over. Both of her parents lived long lives here as part of this community, and both were buried recently in Eben Israel Cemetery here in Cedar Rapids.
The service is organized by the Jewish-Christian Dialogue Group and the Thaler Holocaust Memorial Foundation.
