Pay-at-the-pump policy dramatically lowered number of gas driveoffs
The institution of a “pay-at-the-pumps” policy at gas stations has meant a dramatic drop in the number of gas driveoffs, police report.
In 2007, 773 gas driveoffs were reported to police. In the first six months of 2008, 447 driveoffs were reported.
After the gas prepay policy went into effect in July 2008, the number of driveoffs dropped to 55 for the remaining six months of the year.
In 2009, driveoffs dropped to 29 reports.
So far this year, only two such reports have been filed.
The prepay policy intially drew some citizen complaints, but it is “a perfect example of collaboration between the community and police that has reduced criminal activity,” police Chief Greg Graham said.
