A swath of Eastern Iowa is under a winter storm advisory as up to 4 inches of snow is predicted to fall in only a short time, according to the National Weather Service.
The southern half of Benton County and all of Linn County is under the advisory until 6 p.m., although most of the snow in the area is expected by 4 p.m. The weather service said Cedar Rapids and Vinton could see between 1 and 3 inches.
“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,” the weather service warned. “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.”
Iowa, Johnson, Keokuk and Washington counties also are under a winter storm advisory until 6 p.m., with snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches.
The band of snow brought whiteout conditions early Thursday in Western Iowa and was moving east, through Des Moines and into the Corridor area.
“A band of accumulating snow is occurring over west central Iowa early this morning and will continue to move eastward into central and parts of east central Iowa through this morning,” forecasters said early Thursday. “Snow will fall fairly heavily for a few hours at locations within this band, coinciding with the morning commute in many areas and increasing hazardous travel impacts.”
High temperatures Thursday in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids areas are expected to be in the upper 20s. The highs are expected to drop later this week, which another chance of snow Sunday.
