One person dies in Iowa City house fire; another escapes through window

IOWA CITY - One person died in an early-morning fire in Iowa City Sunday.
Another person escaped the fire through a second-story window, fire officials said.
According to official reports, fire crews were called to 1516 Rochester Ave. in Iowa City at 1:40 a.m. Sunday. When crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and found fire in the basement of the home.
The fire was extinguished with an hour of firefighters' arrival, officials said. Damage to the home was estimated at $100,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The identity of the person who died is pending notification of family members, officials said.
