DELAWARE COUNTY - An 18-year-old found unresponsive in a running car in Delaware County has died.
Authorities say Cole Haan died Monday morning after he and 17-year-old Nichole Lucas accidentally breathed in carbon monoxide from the car.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office says Lucas is still at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, but her condition is improving.
Deputies found Haan and Lucas in the car near Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi on Saturday night. The car had been running for at least an hour, officials said.
Emergency responders took them to the Regional Medical Center in Manchester before airlifting them to UIHC.
Investigators found several defects in the vehicle's exhaust system. The exhaust pipe was broken, allowing exhaust fumes to enter the vehicle.
