URBANA - One person was killed Monday afternoon after police say a minivan veered into the left lane of Interstate 380 and was struck by a semi tractor trailer traveling in that lane.
According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened just before 1 p.m. According to witnesses, both the semi and the minivan had been driving north on I-380 at the 39 mile marker when the minivan swerved first onto the right shoulder, then turned sharply and crossed both lanes into the path of the semi that was in the left lane, according to police. The semi then crashed into the minivan, sending both vehicles into the median where they slid to a rest, police said.
The driver of the minivan was transported by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospital and died as a result of the injuries suffered in the crash. The identity of the victim is being withheld by police pending notification of family members, according to Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig. The driver of the minivan was wearing a seat belt, according to the report.
The driver of the semi, Leon Moore, 45, of Walton Hills, Ohio, did not suffer any serious injuries, police said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
