One dead in crash on Highway 6 in Iowa City

A head-on collison in Iowa City has left one person dead.

Emergency crews responded to the eastbound lane of Highway 6 near the intersection of Heinz Road around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a vehicle collision. Officers said one man was pronounced dead on the scene and another man was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with unspecified injuries.

Iowa City police Sgt. Dave Droll said he did not know the specifics of the accident, but said the cars were traveling in opposite directions before the collision. He added each vehicle was driven by a male and they were the only people in each vehicle.

The eastbound lane of Highway 6 was closed to through traffic beginning at Heinz Road while crews cleared the scene. Droll said he did not know how long the road would be closed. He added Iowa City police will send a press release sometime later in the evening.
