CEDAR RAPIDS -- An afternoon fire is under investigation after a mobile home caught fire on Sunday afternoon.
A press release from Cedar Rapids Fire Department said two people were doing yard work at the Mobile Home Court when they began to smell something burning. The release said the two, Jayson Candler, 23, and Cindy Burns, 45, also saw black marks around the outside of a vent on the mobile home next door. The release said the pair also saw smoke coming out of the mobile home, and told a neighbor to call 911.
Just after 3 p.m., firefighters arrived at the Mobile Home Court at 2925 Johnson Ave. NW, Lot #44, where they saw smoke coming out of the home.
The release said neighbors on scene indicated that the man that owns the home, 71-year-old Mark Yother, likely wasn't home, as his car was not parked out front. After ensuring no one was inside by entering the home by force, a second engine arrived on scene and firefighters extinguished flames in the kitchen near a stove and cabinets.
Though emergency personnel were able to contain the fire to the kitchen, the release said the home received significant heat and smoke damage as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
