Occupants escape from apartment fire in Iowa City, damages estimated at $10,000

IOWA CITY - No injuries were reported but an occupant needed assistance to reach safety after a kitchen fire went out of control Tuesday evening in Iowa City.
According to a media release from the Iowa City Fire Department, at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday firefighters were notified of a kitchen fire at 740 Westgate Street. Firefighters who arrived on the scene discovered the kitchen fire was in a first floor apartment, and they quickly brought it under control, according to the release.
The apartment's occupants were able to escape the building before the firefighters arrived, according to the release, but a resident of an adjacent building required assistance to exit the building. No injuries were reported.
According to the release, 16 firefighters responded to the fire and they were assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, MidAmerican Energy and the American Red Cross.
Damage caused by the fire is estimated at around $10,000, according to the release.
