A North Liberty woman is accused of second-degree theft after authorities say she allegedly deposited checks into a fraudulent University of Iowa Credit Union checking account.
According to official records, Tyisha P. Marshall, 30, of 705 N. Front Street No.1, allegedly deposited $9,500 worth of checks, written against her mother's closed account, at the credit union's ATM in North Liberty.
Police say that Marshall allegedly participated with others to write, cash and present checks totaling $6,385.80 from the account to various Iowa City businesses.
Authorities say that Marshall allegedly opened the fraudulent checking account by using the personal information of her 3-year-old daughter.
Marshall allegedly admitted to knowing the checking account was fraudulent, but said that she "rolled" with it because she needed the money, police said.
Marshall was being held at the Johnson County Jail, but was released on her own recognizance Tuesday, records indicate. Second-degree theft is a Class C felony.
