North Liberty pools closed over “Crypto” concerns
Aug. 21, 2010 2:23 pm
Citing concerns over cryptosporidium, city officials with the North Liberty Community Pool closed both the indoor and outdoor pools Friday morning.
The Johnson County Health Department confirmed a single case of someone with “crypto”, an intestinal disease. The person diagnosted with crypto was at one of the two pools in an “infectious” stage.
Shelly Simpson, city recreation director, said Friday they were notified at about 10:30 on Friday morning. Simpson said crews immediately put in chemicals to hyper-chlorinate both pools. After a certain period of time, they would use other chemicals to lower the chlorine levels enough to make the water safe for swimming.
“We are taking the precautions now as we don't know if it was the indoor or outdoor pool so both pools have to close,” said Simpson.
The North Liberty city website also confirms the closings with a stated goal of re-opening both the Aquatic Center by noon on Saturday.
North Liberty has one of the later public pool closing dates in the Corridor, with the final scheduled date to swim on Tuesday, September 7.
