IOWA CITY – A nonprofit organization raising money for an Iowa City animal shelter to replace one destroyed in the 2008 flood has made its first contribution to the city.
Representatives of Friends of the Animal Shelter Foundation presented the City Council with a check for $200,000 Tuesday night. They also reported that they had raised $750,000 toward their $1 million goal.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is putting $1.4 million toward the shelter, which is to be built on Napoleon Lane on the south side.
Construction on a $3 million city-run animal shelter is scheduled to begin in 2014 and finish the following year.
