The owner of a Waterloo fish market says the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is not expected to affect the price of shrimp at local suppliers or restaurants.
Marilyn Ruvino, owner of Cedar Valley Fish Market, said suppliers have told her that shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico represent 2 percent of the world's supply.
“It's not going to make a major impact,” Ruvino said. “I was going to buy a truckload of shrimp, but my suppliers said not to panic.”
Ruvino said freight costs might go up if there is an impact on diesel prices.
The average price of diesel fuel nationwide is $3.02 per gallon, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. In the Gulf Coast region, diesel fuel is averaging $2.98 per gallon.
