A project to install traffic signals at the intersection of Mount Vernon Road SE and Highway 13 is slated to begin next week, according to Linn County officials.
The projected cost of the project is $456,894, and the project will be completed by Metro Pavers Inc. of Iowa City. 80 percent of the project is being funded by ICAAP (Iowa Clean Air Attainment Program) funds, with the remaining 20 percent being funded through C-STEP (County-State Traffic Engineering) funds, 55 percent of which come from the Iowa Department of Transportation and 45 percent from the county.
The project will also include the construction of northbound and southbound right turn lanes on Highway 13.
Traffic will continue to flow through the area, but delays will occur during construction, officials said.
The project is slated for completion Aug. 22.
Northbound vehicles on Highway 13 wait to get through the four-way stop intersection at Mount Vernon Road and Highway 13 during the afternoon rush hour in October 2010. Traffic backups at the intersection during heavy traffic periods can stretch several hundred yards. (Dave DeWitte/The Gazette)
