National Day of Prayer observed in Cedar Rapids
Approximately 150 individuals gathered to pray for people involved in all levels of government, the military and service members, the education system, American youth, families and the institution of marriage at at Greene Square Park on Thursday.
“We're out here to pray for our nation and the city,” New Covenant Bible Associate Pastor Tye Male said. “The Bible commands us to pray for our leaders - we do on a regular basis, but today we have the privilege of getting together to do this.”
The concept of having a national day of prayer was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952.
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed an amendment to the 1952 law, declaring that the first Thursday of each May was to be designated as The National Day of Prayer.
