Names released in fatal Fairfax crash involving 2-year-old

UPDATE: Linn County authorities have now identified the toddler who was struck and killed in an accident in Fairfax Thursday afternoon.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office said the accident occurred in the parking lot behind 610 Commercial Court in Fairfax. That's a 12-plex condo and apartment unit located just off Williams Boulevard SW in Fairfax.

Investigators said Mikaela Collins, 2, was the child who died when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Tanya Spears, 44, of Fairfax. The child was taken by a private vehicle to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after the accident. She was flown by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where she died.

One investigator on the scene Friday morning said the child was in the back of the complex with her family while they were moving a grill. The toddler apparently ran behind a vehicle that was backing up in the parking lot.
