The first-degree murder trials of three youths accused of killing Kevin Bell at his Cedar Rapids apartment in January have been rescheduled for August.
The three - Denem Null and Gabriel Taylor, both 17, and Johven Lee, 20 - are accused of breaking into Bell's apartment at 113 First Ave. SW on Jan. 11. Bell, 26, was shot in the head by one of the intruders during the botched robbery attempt, police said. He died the next morning at an Iowa City hospital.
Trial for the three is now set for Aug. 23, with a pretrial conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in Linn County District Court.
Null and Taylor were arrested a few weeks after Bell was killed. Lee was arrested Feb. 17 in Naperville, Ill., at DeVry University and returned to Cedar Rapids in mid-March.
According to the criminal complaint, Null is accused of firing the gun that killed Bell.
Bond is set at $1 million for each of the defendants.
