The Corridor is planning to celebrate Pride Month throughout June with more than a dozen events scheduled mostly in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
For CR Pride President Corey Jacobson, pride is about listening to community members in welcoming and inviting spaces and finding ways to support them.
“When you come to Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha or surrounding areas, you really do find a community that’s welcoming to all and accepting, and in the city of Cedar Rapids, welcome is our language,” Jacobson said.
Joe Reilly, president of Iowa City Pride, said it’s “always a wow moment” for him to attend Pride events along with people of varying backgrounds.
“You don’t send out any invites and you’re like, ‘How many people are going to come this year?’ It seems like every year I’m constantly surprised with the amount of community members and allies that come out,” Reilly said.
Both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids have planned parades and festivals alongside other events, including the Drag Icecapades at The Rink at Coral Ridge Mall. And Iowa City Pride this year is holding a new, free event at The Englert after the festival concludes.
