DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - Public works officials in Davenport say they estimate the eastern Iowa city has more than 100 sinkholes along its roads.
Michael Clarke is director of the Davenport Public Works Department. Clarke says a sinkhole is a "very large living room size hole sitting underneath the surface." That's even though they look like normal holes in the road.
Officials say sinkholes often start with a cracked pipe that causes soil to wash away. Clarke says that "creates a void around the pipe" and the hole gets bigger and bigger.
Earlier this week, the city approved a contract with a construction company to repair certain sinkholes within 30 days.
