More security cameras could soon come to Kinnick
May. 13, 2011 9:10 pm
University of Iowa officials are working to secure funding from the Department of Homeland Security to upgrade or enhance the current security system at Kinnick Stadium, UI Director of Public Safety Chuck Green said.
Green said DHS has interest in upgrading the current system because of the massive crowds that flock to Kinnick Stadium on game day. The university has been using cameras to monitor areas inside the stadium since 2006.
"There are additional spots that we would like to be able to monitor," Green said. "We might have some still cameras that we might want to change to pan, tilt and zoom cameras, so we can move around and zoom in on things."
Green said the upgrade would only affect areas inside of the stadium and around its perimeter. He said the parking lots would not be put under video surveillance. Because of potential security issues Green would not say where the additional cameras would be placed or how many would be added.
If DHS gives funding for the camera upgrade new cameras would be installed before the start of the 2011-12 football season, Green said.
