IOWA COUNTY - HACAP will host its first mobile food pantry Saturday in Conroy.
HACAP will be handing out boxes of non-perishable food and some self-selection food from 10-11 a.m. in the Machinists' Hall parking lot, at F Street and Eighth Avenue.
All Iowa County residents who are food insecure and meet financial eligibility requirements are invited. To be eligible, you must have income at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level. This comes out to about $44,860 a year for a family of four, according to HACAP.
According to Feeding America, 1,840 Iowa County residents are food insecure and 695 children and elderly live in poverty.
HACAP serves seven counties: Linn, Benton, Johnson, Cedar, Jones, Iowa and Washington.
Pallets of green beans, peaches and tomatoes are stacked awaiting distribution at the Hawkeye Area Community Assistance Program Food Reservoir on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, in Hiawatha. These are provided to HACAP through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), a federal program that provides commodities at no cost. Food bank funding has been left out of this year's budget proposal by Gov. Terry Branstad. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)
