Missouri considers statewide policy on traffic cameras
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission is considering a new policy for using cameras to enforce traffic laws on state highways.
The proposal on the commission's agenda for a meeting Wednesday would affect cities and counties that install cameras to enforce speed limits or stop lights on state highways.
Typically, the cameras take photos of vehicles running red lights or exceeding the speed limit. Citations then typically are sent to vehicle owners.
As of last fall, nearly 90 traffic cameras were installed around Missouri.
State transportation director Kevin Keith has expressed concern that some cameras were being used as a revenue-generating tool for local governments.
