UPDATE: Police have located a missing Tennessee girl safe in Cedar Rapids.
Dakota Mateo, 13, of Dickson County, Tenn., and relatives met with Cedar Rapids police Wednesday morning, Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. Mateo had been missing since July 12 and was believed to be with her mother, 37-year-old Brandy Turner, who does not have custody rights.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued an endangered child alert last week, and noted that the pair might be headed for Cedar Rapids. After making contact with Turner last week, police said Mateo voluntarily turned herself in with relatives on Wednesday.
"(Mateo) wants to move here to be with other family members," Hamblin said.
Hamblin said Tennessee authorities were en route to Cedar Rapids to take custody of Mateo, who is a ward of the state. She is expected to be placed in foster care.
There are no local charges against Turner at this time, police said. Any charges Turner faces in Tennessee are non-extraditable, authorities said.
