Here is a list of some of the Memorial Day celebrations happening around Eastern Iowa.
Arlington
Monday, Taylorville Cemetery. Pastor Lisa Schroeder of the United Methodist Church in Arlington will be the guest speaker. Boy Scout Troop 119 will lay a wreath before the Our Defenders monument and the Starmont High School band will perform. Lunch served after at the Legion Hall.
Belle Plaine
10 a.m. Monday, Oak Hill Cemetery. Officer of the Day: Deborah Gensley. Guest speaker: Anna Jacobi.
Brandon
9 a.m. Monday, Military Services, cemetery, Speaker Craig Streeter; 7:30 to 11 a.m. coffee, rolls and juice, Bear Creek Church.
Cedar Rapids
9 a.m. Monday, Mount Calvary Cemetery, 375 32nd Street Dr. Rain site is St. Matthew parish.
10 a.m. Monday, Veterans Memorial Park at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 950 Rockford Rd SW. Master of Ceremonies: Cary J. Hahn. Invocation and benediction by Bob Hennessy, D.A.V. Chapter 10.
11 a.m. Monday, Non-denominational Memorial Day Service, Campbell Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road. Speaker: retired Lt. Paul Pelletier, U.S. Navy.
Sunday and Monday, Avenue of Flags, Cedar Memorial, 4200 First Ave. NE. More than 1,500 American flags will line the avenues from Sunday morning through Monday evening.
11 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day tribute, Cedar Memorial, 4200 First Ave. NE. Keynote speaker: Sgt. Brian T. Been of the Cedar Rapids Police Department. Lawn chairs are welcome at the program and in the event of rain, the program will be held in the Chapel of Memories.
11:30 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day Ceremony, Czech National Cemetery, 2200 C St. SW, inside main entrance at Veterans Memorial. In case of rain, ceremony will be in the St. Wenceslaus Gym Building, 1230 Fifth St. SE.
Center Point
9:45 a.m. Monday, Washington Street Bridge; 10 a.m. Center Point Cemetery. rain site will be at the Center Point-Urbana High School gym. Avenue of Flags will fly today through Monday, weather permitting.
Deep River
9 a.m. Monday, Assemble at Morrison Schrader Post 296; 10 a.m. Guernsey Cemetery; 11 a.m. Deep River Golden Rod Cemetery.
Delhi
4 p.m. Monday, Decoration Day program, Bay Church and Cemetery. Highway D42. Open house following Civil War re-enactment.
Holbrook and Parnell
10 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day Service, St. Joseph Cemetery, Parnell; 10:30 a.m. St. Michael Cemetery, Holbrook; 11 a.m. Memorial Day Mass, St. Michael's Holbrook; lunch following mass at St. Michael Hall.
Independence
10:15 a.m. Sunday, Memorial Day observance service, First Baptist Church, 301 Second St. SE. The service will pay tribute to fallen soldiers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.
Lost Nation
2 p.m. Sunday, Smithtown Church, 1223 125th St. Speaker: Tom Davis. Social hour and refreshments following.
McGregor
9:30 a.m. Monday, St. Mary's Cemetery. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at McGregor School and ends with a waterfront program honoring those lost at sea. Music by MFL-Mar Mac High School band. 11 a.m. ceremony at Pleasant Grove Cemetery features Norb Aschom.
Ryan
8:45 a.m. Monday, Ryan Calvary Cemetery; 9:10 a.m. Lutheran Cemetery; 9:25 a.m. Golden Church Cemetery; 9:50 a.m. Silver Creek Cemetery; 10:10 a.m. Monti Bridge; 10:25 a.m. Monti Cemetery; 10:55 a.m., Masonville Cemetery; and 11:30 a.m. Ryan Memorial. Steak fry following ceremonies from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Strawberry Point
10 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day service, Cass Township Cemetery. The Rev. Linn Reischstadter of St. Sebard Lutheran Church in Strawberry Point will give the address. Joan Thomas of Strawberry Point will sing. The Legion Auxiliary will place a wreath in front of the military memorial. Two members of the Starmont High School band will play “Taps.” Lunch will be served at the Legion Hall following.
Vining
11 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day Services, National Cemetery, lunch following at Vining C.S.A. Hall. Norbert Cloud of Clutier will be master of ceremonies. Guest speaker will be S.S.G Gropper Tony of the Iowa National Guard.
Walker
Today through Monday, The Avenue of Flags will be displayed at the Walker Public Cemetery and Sacred Heart Cemetery. 8:30 a.m., parade will leave for Walker Public Cemetery; 8:45 a.m., Walker Public Cemetery service; 9:30 a.m., service at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In case of rain, services will be held in the North-Linn Walker Center on Ely Street at 9 a.m. Omelet brunch at Legion Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
West Branch
1:30 and 3 p.m. Monday, Civil War Remembrance Day program, Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum, 210 Parkside Dr. Discussion and concert of Civil War music by the Marengo Civil War Band. Civil War re-enactors from the 24th Iowa Infantry will display their equipment and discuss camp life and combat during the war.
West Liberty
1:30 p.m. Monday, Dedication for the All Veteran's Memorial, All Veteran's Memorial Park, located on Highway 6 near Midwest One Bank.
Winthrop
9:30 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day Services, Fairview Cemetery, followed by a service at St. Pat's Cemetery. In case of rain, services will be at 9:45 a.m. in the East Buchanan School Gym.
Victor
10 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day Service, American Legion, 601 Third St. Stanley Kovar will be presented the Knight of the Legion of Honor Medal from the French government.
