IOWA CITY - University of Iowa leaders have not taken a stand in the recent discussion about banning game day vendors on Melrose Avenue, but UI President Sally Mason said they would join the conversation if asked.
“This is a city issue and I have confidence in our city leaders. They are leading the discussion, as they should,” Mason said via email Thursday. “They have always been excellent at opening up the discussion and we would join that discussion if our leaders were to ask.”
The issue was raised last month by the Iowa City Council, in a discussion about regulating the Melrose Avenue commercial vendors who sell food and apparel on football game days, immediately south of Kinnick Stadium on Melrose. Some neighbors have complained about trash and congestion.
But city council members said they don't want to ban the vendors outright. Instead, they want to draft a permit system so the city can impose regulations.
Mason said Thursday there are too many unknowns at this point to speculate about potential outcomes of any changes.
“I do hope that there are solutions that can address the concerns of all involved parties,” Mason said. “Personally, I believe the vendors contribute in a positive way to the atmosphere that we all enjoy on game day. I also understand the concerns of some of the homeowners and I understand their desire to have their concerns addressed.”
