Mark Becker will remain at Oakdale

Mark Becker, convicted of killing a legendary Iowa high school football coach last year, will remain at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale.

Becker, 25, completed the initial intake and evaluation process a few weeks ago and has transferred into the living units at the center, Greg Ort, deputy warden said Thursday. Becker will receive ongoing evaluations and treatment for his mental illness and he will likely remain at Oakdale until his treatment needs change, he said.

Ort said he couldn't give any information regarding his treatment or how often he would be evaluated.

Oakdale has living units, two 24-bed units, for those who are mentally unstable or can't function normally.

Psychiatrists who testified at the trial diagnosed Becker with schizophrenia and his mother Joan Becker has previously told the media he is taking medications to treat his illness.

Becker pleaded insanity during the trial but the jury rejected his claim.

Becker shot Ed Thomas, Aplington/Parkersburg High School football coach, several times  June 24, 2009,  while the coach was in the weight room of the temporary high school. About 20 students were in the room and some testified during the three week trial in Butler County District Court. Becker was sentenced to life in prison in April.
