Marion man accused of sexual abuse of woman and child now faces additional charge

MARION - A Marion man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and sexual exploitation of a child now faces an additional charge with the prosecutor asking for a higher bond in light of threats he has made to family members.

James A. Olds, 43, was initially charged with third-degree sexual abuse of a woman in one case, and in an unrelated case, charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, lascivious acts with a child, lascivious conduct with a minor, indecent contact with a child, indecent exposure, and false imprisonment. He now is charged with second-degree sexual abuse of the child.

Assistant Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks filed an application Wednesday for the court to issue a warrant for arrest on the additional charge and to increase Olds' bail from $10,000 to $50,000 cash only. The additional charge is a more serious offense with mandatory prison time - 70 percent of the 25 years must be served before being eligible for parole.

A hearing on the bond issue is set 11:00 a.m. Friday.

Olds pleaded not guilty to all the initial charges in August and has been free on the previous $10,000 bond.

On Sept. 20, the alleged 6-year-old victim made further disclosures at the St. Luke's Child Protection Center detailing acts of sexual abuse that warrants second-degree sexual abuse, according to the application.

Marion Police also discovered Olds made direct and implied threats towards the family member of the alleged victim and Maybanks believes there is a threat to the safety of the child, her family and the public, according to the application for increased bond.

According to the criminal complaint, around Aug. 19, 2009, Olds sexually abused a woman at his residence.

About 18 months before that incident, police said Olds repeatedly exploited a girl between the time she was 3 and 1/2 to 6-years-old. According to a search warrant, the child, now 6, told an investigator Olds sexually abused her and in another incident he made her disrobe and took photos of her and showed them to other people.

The child said Olds tied her to a chair while taking the photos, according to the search warrant.
