Marion council candidate calls for fiscal restraint

Calling for more fiscal restraint, Dwight Hogan is running for a seat on the Marion City Council.

Hogan, 60, is running for the at-large seat now held by Craig Adamson, who has not filed for re-election.

I believe we must show more fiscal restraint with our city budget,” Hogan said.

He also called for more transparent city government that seeks input rom all residents, property owners and business owners.

The actions of the council must reflect the will of the people,” Hogan said.

Hogan sees encouraging signs in the community.

“With Fibreright, El Plast America Inc., and the potential of Plasma Power our industrial and employment opportunities appear to be moving in a positive manner,” he said. “The uptown development also appears to be moving in a positive manner with the Phil High building, Matthews's renovation of Memorial Hall and Capital Commercial's development of the former Jiffy Lube.”

Among his top concerns are the maintenance of city infrastructure including streets and the need for Fire Station 3 in the northern part of the city.

Hogan has attended city council work sessions and meetings on a regular basis. He has pushed for an ethics policy for the council, a local option sales tax oversight committee, and a storm water advisory committee. These are now in place.

A 1971 graduate of Marion High School and 1975 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Hogan has four years experience as an engineering tech. He has spent 27 years as an insurance adjuster and is a past president of the Cedar Rapids Claim Association and a past board member of the Mental Health Advocates. He has served on the Streetscape Committee and is presently on the Local Option Sales Tax Oversight Committee.

There is a three-way race for the at-large seat. In addition to Hogan, former councilwoman Mary Lou Pazour and Ron Swearingen have filed.

The city election will be Nov. 5.
