MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) - Plans are in the works to reopen the caves at Maquoketa State Park, but visitors must attend an educational program to help protect the bats.
The caves have been closed since 2010 to slow the spread of a fatal fungus called white nose syndrome. It spreads from bat to bat, but officials closed the park's caves because of concerns that it might be spread by footwear and clothing.
The Quad-City Times in Davenport says when the caves reopen, visitors will be required to attend a short program on the risks of the fungus and transmitting it.
Friends of Maquoketa Caves and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will host a grand opening on April 14, and officials will begin offering the awareness program.
