University of Iowa Health Care began its mandatory flu shot program as scheduled today.
Members of two unions can opt out of the program for personal reasons until an administrative law judge decides if the mandate violates union contracts.
Other workers who don't get a shot or obtain a medical or religious exemption could lose their jobs.
Service Employees International Union Local 199 and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 12 represent nearly 4,500 workers for UI Health Care, which employs about 11,000 people at UI Hospitals and Clinics and the Carver College of Medicine.
The vaccine is for seasonal flu. Nothing has been announced regarding H1N1 flu shots.
