UPDATE: A 65-year-old man was seriously hurt when the pickup he was driving slammed into a silo near Monticello, authorities said.
According to the Jones County Sheriff's Office, the man's pickup left the road and struck a silo at 18274 Hardscrabble Rd. The accident was reported around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday when a farmer discovered the accident.
Deputies were still trying to determine when the accident happened.
The man's name has not been released. He was flown by air ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, authorities said.
Hardscrabble Road is a winding gravel road that goes north out of Monticello and curves back to the west. The accident happened at a bend in the road, but it wasn't immediately clear if that was a contributing factor.
Tracks in the ditch indicate the man was driving southbound, went off the road and through a fence. The pickup traveled more than 200 yards through a hayfield before hitting the silo.
No other details were immediately available.
Fence posts lay in a ditch after a pickup ran off the road, through the fence and into a hay field before striking the farthest right silo in the background, this morning, Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Authorities said a 65-year-old male was hurt and taken by air ambulance to a hospital. (Jeff Raasch/The Gazette)
