Police said two young brothers did what they were supposed to when a man on the sex offender registry approached them at a Cedar Rapids motel.
Scott A. Share, 41, address unknown, has been charged with two counts of lascivious acts with a child. He is accused of trying to solicit the two boys, ages 7 and 10, at the Budget Inn, 3100 16th Ave. SW, on April 8.
According to police, Share was staying at the motel when he approached the two boys outside. He allegedly asked the boys if they would "play with or touch his penis," according to a criminal complaint.
The boys declined and immediately reported the incident to a parent, who called police that same afternoon. The boys were not hurt, police said.
"These were totally random (kids)," Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. "They did not know this man. He just approached them."
Hamblin said the brothers had a good description of Share, and with the help of Budget Inn staff, they were able to verify Share's identity. As a result of the incident, investigators learned that Share, who is on the sex offender registry for a previous incident in Jones County, had not notified authorities of his change in address. He was arrested by Linn County deputies two weeks ago and charged with failing to register.
Following more investigation, Share was served with the new charges Tuesday at the Linn County Jail, police said.
Share was convicted in 2005 of three counts of third-degree sexual abuse against a 7-year-old boy in Anamosa. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for each count, but according to online records, he was released July 5, 2011.
