A Cedar Rapids man has died at a hospital, four days after he was involved in a head-on collision.
Kraig “K.C.” Weber, 38, died Saturday, according to an obituary submitted to The Gazette. He was the driver of a sport-utility vehicle that struck another SUV around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday on a railroad overpass on Sixth Street SW, just south of 33rd Avenue SW.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the crash, and firefighters had to help both drivers out of the wreckage. The other driver, Madeline Freeze, 17, of Cedar Rapids, was treated and released from Mercy Medical Center, police said.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said investigators determined Weber's SUV was southbound when it crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with the oncoming SUV driven by Freeze. She said the reason Weber's vehicle crossed the center line has not been identified.
Weber's death is the third traffic fatality in Cedar Rapids in 2012.
Weber was a graduate of Jefferson High School and Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, and worked several years for Quaker Oats, according to his obituary.
