Man convicted in Kalona sex assault attempt sent to prison

Jun. 21, 2012 10:18 am
An Aplington man found guilty of entering the bedroom of a Kalona woman in September with a rifle, camera and roll of tape has been sentenced to two years in prison.
A Johnson County jury in May convicted Dallas J. Miller, 23, of first-degree burglary and assault with intent to commit sex abuse, and he was sentenced earlier this week to prison and subsequent supervision as a convicted sex offender.
He could have faced up to 25 years in prison on the burglary charge and up to five years in prison on the assault charge.
Miller was convicted following a week-long that included evidence of how he entered the bedroom of a Kalona woman about 2:20 a.m. Sept. 8 with materials investigators believe he was going to use to sexually assault the woman.
He then broke off the door knob so family members couldn't get in and covered the woman's mouth with his hands so she couldn't scream, according to police. The victim managed to cry out for her family, and investigators said Miller fled out a window.
When deputies responded minutes later, they found Miller's pickup parked 100 yards from the house and the rifle outside the woman's door, along with black tape and a camera in her bedroom, deputies reported.
Miller knew the victim, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
