A male subject in Fort Dodge was killed Saturday when a police officer shot him while responding to a call.
Fort Dodge Police officers responded to a call at 8:40 a.m. Saturday for an individual who was “exhibiting out of control behavior,” including allegedly injuring a dog, according to a news release from the department. Officers did not know whether the male was armed.
While on the scene at 1525 Fourth Ave. South, officers learned that the male subject had an active warrant for violation of probation from an original charge of domestic abuse, according to the news release.
When officers entered the residence, they encountered a male subject “armed with two knives that ran at the officers,” the release states.
An officer “discharged his firearm resulting in the death of the individual,” the release states.
The release does not name of the male or the officer who shot him.
In addition to Fort Dodge Police, the Webster County Sheriff’s office, Iowa State Patrol and Webster County Attorney’s Office responded to the incident. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting will be led by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
“The Fort Dodge Police Department acknowledges the gravity of this incident and recognizes its impact on the community,” the release states. “We extend our deepest sympathies to all affected parties, during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency and accountability in all our actions.”
