Looming storms move UI homecoming concert indoors, limit attendance

Oct. 3, 2013 4:06 pm
With showers and thunderstorms forecast to roll in during Friday evening's homecoming festivities in downtown Iowa City, event planners have moved the Third Eye Blind concert indoors.
Third Eye Blind and Basic Vacation will co-headline the 2013 University of Iowa Homecoming concert in the Iowa Memorial Union main lounge rather than on the Pentacrest lawn, SCOPE Productions announced today.
Basic Vacation, scheduled to open for Third Eye Blind, will start playing at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. The concert is free to the public, but because it's been moved indoors, there now is a capacity of 2,000 people, according to event staff.
When the concert was outside, there was no capacity.
The UI's homecoming king and queen coronation also has been moved indoors. They will be crowned before the concert in the IMU.
The National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of rain and thunder after 1 p.m. Friday and into the night.
The homecoming parade is scheduled to weave through downtown beginning at 5:45 p.m.
